Hey Folks, I bought this engine/transmission sight unseen, and the pictures below are all I have until it arrives, so I apologize for that. It is supposedly a '57 272 out of a pickup, but until I get it here and run the numbers it's just a gamble. The absence of a clutch slave cylinder (like my '60 F-100 had originally) and the fuel pump with vaccuum ports (like my T-bird) are both interesting items. The plan (for now at least ) is to keep the long block & bell housing/clutch ass'y, and add a T5 for an upcoming project, and as a home for the extra parts I pulled off the T-bird (3x2 intake, manifolds, valve covers, etc.)...and sell everything else... My question is this. The tranny is a 3-speed overdrive, but from what I see, the spline on the input shaft is not typical to the other Y-block tranny's I've seen, and the seller confirmed the splines were different from those in the clutch ass'y. How do I determine the origins of this? It's supposed to be a T85, but we'll see. It spins and shifts freely from what seller said. I plan to sell the tranny to recoup some of my purchase price, anyone care to give me a ball park price range to start at? Thanks for the help...and here are the pictures:

I think it came out of a 57 passenger instead of a pickup. That would make it a 292 The fine spline input shaft on the transmission was used beginning in 1957. From what I can see, it is a T86 laying on the flat tin cover. A T85 or T89 would have a 9 bolt shift lever cover. Also I think most pickups had a U-joint instead of a spline on the output shaft. As far as the value, it all depends on the condition. If the engine is stuck and the transmission has blue gears or broken synchros or teeth missing from the cluster gear, it's not worth much.

When you get the transmission home, you almost have to take the overdrive section apart to see if the sun and planetary gears are good. If the tranny runs dry, the sun and planetary gears break and sieze up as a unit, but the transmission still functions and shifts normally. You've just lost the overdrive. You may be able to shift the lever on the tranny for overdrive, put 12 volts to one wire on the solenoid. Turn the input shaft and see if 7 tenths of a revolution gives you one revolution on the tailshaft.

My guess is a car also. Side motor mounts and oil dip stick in front.

I appreciate all the input guys...I'm looking forward to checking everything out...a quick bore check will answer the 272/292 question. The engine spins free by hand, and the seller swears that it has "G" heads, but we'll see. If it's areally a '57 engine, I suppose the odds are pretty fair that they are "G" heads... I think this would make a great 'plant for a period-style "A" roadster, or something along those lines...that is, if I don't get tired of looking at it... Thanks Again for th input...

Like said before, everything I see says car engine not truck. Motor mounts, exhaust manifolds, water outlet, waterpump pulley, ect. Don't know what you paid but you could have some good stuff there, but don't count you Y parts before they're hatched.  Good chance for G heads though. See ya Saturday!

We'll definitely see you Saturday Tim. I'll keep an eye out for the '58...I think my Dad is going to come to the drags with me, trying to get him to think outside the box a bit  And I probably wouldn't have bought it, but I was able to get free shipping (refrigerated, even:hehe ) through a buddy who has a freight carrier... The side-mounts will be much more useful for my intentions, if I get that far before selling/trading everything off...

Did you check the Numbers on the heads,if its a 59 ford it could have 113 heads,not a bad thing either. Carl

CarlNope, it hasn't even been delivered yet...you all have seen as much as I have...I curious as hell about it...the only thing I am keeping is the long block and bell housing, depending on how long I want to trip over it ... The old Edelbrock 553 will be going on this engine (573 going on the 312 in the 'Bird) as well as the original T-Bird manifolds (Vintage '56 Hedmans on the 'Bird) and valve covers...I'm tired of having this stuff on a shelf, so why not get an engine to store it on, right?

what does it take to add the t5 to a 64 f100 4speed does it take a complete new bellhousing or do they bolt up message me if you know
