Its not a T86. Its either a T85 or T89. Probably a T89. Either one is a stronger box than the T86.

thanks.. i was hoping for it to be a T-89 cause i know that's one of the stronger boxes.. there is a spot on it where it looks like an ID tag used to be so i'm a little in the dark.. the tailshaft unit just has the usual R-10 over-drive stamps on it so no help there.. either way i love the trans i just need to buy a couple parts for it and want to make sure i'm getting the right one's..

So does three spped "overdrive" mean it is a 4-speed manual trans? Or is this a 2 speed trans with Overdrive for a total of 3 speeds? I'm getting curious becuase the 56 customline I'm about to pick up has a 3-on the tree and I'm wondering what tranny that will be. I know nothing about trannys from back then...a whole new world for me!

Nate; 3 speed overdrive: Though technically a "6 speed", in normal use only a 5 speed (lower OD axle ratio would require very high revs before minimum OD/governor engagement speed achieved).

Warner used a R10 and R11 tail section, the R11 being a little heavier. But the overdrive unit in both of them is pretty bullet proof. It is the front box that usually fails if they are abused. The T86 had a weaker input gear, cluster gear and sliding gear, but they are all good transmissions.
6ft6, The front box is very similar to a regular 3 speed transmission. The overdrive unit is a planetary gear that is capable of direct or .70 overdrive. There is a governor that does not allow the unit to shift into overdrive until 28 mph road speed has been achieved. You can have 6 forward gears if you use direct and overdrive in each of the 3 forward gears. This is easily achieved by bypassing the governor with a toggle switch. Overdrive really needs 3.89 for 4.11 rears to be practical. I have been driving overdrive for over 45 years and wouldn't own a Ford without one. There are a lot of good articles that have been written about Borg Warner T85,T86 T89 that can be found on the internet.

Hi, I am new here and I just purchased a 3 speed manual with Borg Warner R10 F 1A overdrive, who looks similar. The seller says it comes from a 55 T-bird, but I am not sure, so I need the help of the experts here. Pictures are better than thousand words:
