Looks like a decent find... I found one that was also a 272 from a 58-59 truck, with the 471 heads on it.

I see a lot of 272's out there. Many people seem to pass them up for the 292's, but truth be told it is still a block that can usually be safely bored to a stock 292 bore, making it as cost effective a build as possible for a y. Plus compression height of std 292 pistons should be taller hence the whole deck height issue affecting the actual compression.

Some of you chimed in on my previous THREAD about the Y-block that I picked up on craigslist (sight-unseen). It was a roll of the dice, but I figured the odds were with me to get some decent stuff. It finally arrived yesterday at the truck terminal, and I got it home and nestled into its resting place...

Here's the only pictures I had to go buy after I bought it. My buddy took these at his portland terminal after he picked up the engine/trans for me:

Anyway, here's what I ended up with (I refer to it as a '57 due to the carb and distributor, and the heads):

  • ECG block... 1957 passenger 272. The cylinders seem as clean as my T-Bird, with no ridge, and the engine spins over very easily
  • EDB9430/EDB9431 Manifolds...
  • T-stat housing, intake & carb... broken, cracked (junk)
  • Good distributor ('57-later)... forgot to get the numbers, but nothing special
  • Accesories/brackets...
  • Low ration rockers... again, less wear than what was on my T-bird,
  • ECZ-G heads... This is what I was really hoping for. Still have "Fomoco" stamped on the intake valves. One valve stuck open, but heads look pretty good.
  • T-86 o/d transmission... Spins/shifts freely, R10 o/d unit.
  • Clean bell housing, clutch fork, & starter...

Just thought I'd share what I ended up with...
