That is the rare but sometimes fatal bluegreendiscofever algea.  I don't recommend sticking your face into it and inhaling..can cause halucinations...sometimes these halucinations can make you bring home a broken down old car and dream about spending lots of time and money on itBigGrin

It just occurred to me, despite my very scientific response, this probably doesn't belong in "technical" forum section. oops.

Yeah...you can only joke about leaving that dash in place if you don't have to get in the car.  That carpet is soooooooo nasty...I'd have to wear a respirator when I was driving the thing.   If  I ever rolled the windows down at highway speed, stuff would blow in my eyes and cause an accident!!

Who knows...it is possible that the last version of the H1N1 swine flu is still hiding out in that carpet from the 70s!BigGrin

It is too late...the carpet is in the trash can already.  Here is what I found underneath the carpet.  I'm open to ideas for a new attempt at a dash pad if anyone has one?  Snake skin?  Carbon Fiber Applique? Vinyl flooring?

Nate - Sweet ride! I love original cars!!

One thing though, you might want to turn the key off before you drain the battery... =-)

Best of luck with your new project!

Good Catch Rusty...although there is a battery in the car in the photos at the top of the thread those are old pics, it has been long removed...I'm still dreaming about the day when I have a reason to put a battery in this thing!Hehe  (I've actually been tempted just to see if all the lights work!)

Looks like a great starting place Nate...I like you screen name...I am 6'6" also, assuming that's the meaning...

To clean up the dash, just clean, scuff and paint...

These guys can match factory color codes in an aerosol can with very good results:
