They will go in when you turn them to the right position.A LARGE rubber mallett is useful to have on hand!

The only way I have ever managed to do it is wiggle them in from the bottom. A lift helps, but pretty tall jack stands are a must so you have room to wiggle them. I have made it a point to install stainless steel head pipes for the last 10 years. Once per car is enough. Years ago I used to cut the pipe about where it lands in the middle of the cross member. I then stripped about a 4" piece of 2" pipe over the splice and clamped it with muffler clamps. That method made it a little easier to adjust the pipe away from the frame. If they rattle against the frame, its enough to drive anyone crazy.

Thanks, Mark,

I don't think there will be any cutting of the frame, lol. Did you have your car on a lift? I bought the new head pipes but honestly I can't see how they will go in. I know we all like a tight fit sometimes w00tbut...

I had to install mine from the bottom.Had to keep turning to find the correct position where I could force them through the frame. They would not come close to going in from the top.It is tight even from the bottom.I have heard of some cutting the pipes and rejoining them and even worse cutting out the bottom of the frame to install. They wil fit without cutting.Just tight!I would think they have to be removed from underneath too!

Hello All,

Do the exhaust head pipes (exhaust pipe between exhaust manifolds and mufflers) remove from the top or the bottom. Looks real tight. If out the top I'm assuming the exhaust manifolds have to be removed also.

This is on a 1955 Ranchwagon, 272ci, dual exhaust.

Hope this is the correct forum...

Thanking you in advance,

BOB
