Slowly putting my 56 Merc back together and am at the point where I am ready to slip the Y back in. As such I am cleaning / painting various parts and the bellhousing is next up .

As I looked at it this morning I noticed that there is an open hole on the transmission side where the starter bendix lives. I believe that there is a press in metal plug or cap that should go in there. The hole is about 2.5".... Anyone have any idea as to where I might find a plug ?

Figured it out and figured that I would share the answer.

After looking at a good picture of the "plug" it looked a whole lot like a front axle dust cap , you know the one that goes over the nut that holds the front wheel bearings on. Went to my local NAPA guy and found a dust cap for a 2.5" hole and sure enough it does the trick and looks very similar to what Ford used.
