While wrenching on the 57 Fairlane sitting next to my soninlaw's scrub with a 9 inch Ford rear, His friends drinking my beer said that the 9 inch was not Fords, but produced for Ford.. so justifying the use in scrubs.. Does anyone know the history of the Ford 9 inch..??

The original version of the 9" rear end was introduced by Ford in 1957.(along with the first use of the 4150 Holley carb) Did they actually manufacture it directly? I don't know, but I'm virtually positive that they were made to their order. And to the best of my knowledge, no one else used them first. The person you are dealing with is likely justifying use of a 9" in a C-e-y because they are or were specified use by NASCAR in recent times.. But then their are some of the before mentioned types that will say or do anything to justify their position..

If you look at a 9 inch carrier, you'll see Ford logo and casting numbers on it.  The factory gears also have part numbers stamped on them.  As Paul says, they could have been built by a vendor, but rest assured Ford would not have allowed the vender to sell them to anyone else with Ford numbers on it.  Since Ford no longer uses them, the aftermarket guys are building them now.  So that scrub could have a Moser or Strange or MW or Curry or other brand rear in it.
