I’m needing to buy either two 1.4:1 Thomas rockers or three 1.6:1 Thomas rockers. This will allow me to be able to make up a set of rocker arm assemblies for testing. The rockers need not be pristine but usable. I can resurface the wear tip providing it’s not totally destroyed and I may be able to change out the wear tips from some of the rockers I have that are not usable in other areas. These are just going to be used for dyno testing so if someone wants to loan what I need instead of selling, that will work also. Just mark them so I can be sure to return them. Having two of the 1.4:1 rockers will allow me to make up a set that’s 1.4:1 on one valve and 1.6:1 on the other. Haven’t decided yet which valve gets which if I end up getting some more 1.4’s. Three 1.6:1 rockers will allow me to make up a full set of 1.6’s which is preferred. My contact info is at www.eatonbalancing.com . Thanks, Ted.

Ted. You should have a set of mine to rebush along with a few spares. Look in the stuff I sent down with you. Your welcome to use some of them. Chuck in NH

Chuck. These Thomas rockers I’m working with are actually yours. After running them through the rocker ratio checker, they ended up being a mixed set of both ratios. Now that I know what to look for on these rockers, the ratios are reasonably easy to identify by looking at the location of the pushrod adjusting screw. At this point I’m just trying to get enough rockers of one or the other so I can make something work for dyno testing. Even with the spares you provided, there’s not enough to make a pair of workable rocker arm assemblies while keeping some kind of logic for the ratios on the intakes and exhausts. I’ve culled three rockers out of the group that are unusable and they were also a mix of both ratios. Because the Thomas rockers do not have offset adjuster screws, they end up being a compromise from both a pushrod and valve stem tip centering point of view which is going to limit them from being used in any kind of sustained running environment. But for a dyno test they will be fine. And being as they are made from magnesium, they are plenty light.

Oh! Well I'll take a look in my piles and see if I have any more. I think that was all I had though. Let you know soon. Did you get the mail I sent you? Chuck

Ted, I found my stash. I had about 10 with the gap to the adjuster and another 8 without. I've mailed them all to you today. I tried to pick out the best previously but didn't realize they were two ratios. One of them is very tight and possibly NOS the rest are pretty worn on the shaft area. Were you able to find a bushing that would work? I seperated one of the tips by pressing a small wire through the hole on top of the rocker. They have a serrated pin that is pressed in. Turning the 5pt outer part of the tip just breaks them. Some have a hole, some don't. I guess some have to be drilled then pressed out. I also had this wild thought of putting a roller bearing into them . Probably wouldn't have enough meat in the rocker for this type of surgery but??? Anyway you should have the rest in a day or two. If you can make two full sets without the cost going crazy lets do it! Chuck in NH

Can I assume that Thomas Rocker Arms were discontinued years ago? I recall a friend had them on his drag car in the 60s and for an undiagnosed reason one failed, it snapped in two...

Yes, they were a fairly common high performance rocker in the 50's and 60's. Made of magnesium and very light weight. They had steel adjusters and a steel insert for the valve contact. I'm not sure of the racing history of them but someone out here will surely know more. I picker up parts of at least two sets on EBAY over the years. Most were badly worn. The magnesium didn't wear well against the steel rocker shafts. A lot of them are a little egg shaped, probably due to the usual oiling problems. Some of the ones I picked up had bushing in them. Look about the size of wrist pin bushings. That must have helped. I'll be real curious to see the Dyno results for them. Chuck in NH
