I had one AG teacher in High school that had his bus licence and when ever he didn't feel like teaching he would say "I've got ol' #52 out back, let's go to the Jolly Cone"  Ol' #52  was the worst POS the the motor pool had and the only bus that they would let Mr. Sylvia drive.  He would just kinda slow down for the R/R  crossings and open the door "good enough"  and on more than one occasion he would be next to some guy at a light, open the door, look over the top of his "Cool Hand Luke, man with no eyes, sun glasses" then rev the engine.  When the light changed he would take off as quick as the wore out old 352 would go, throwing kids out of their seats in laughter.  One time he got it stuck in the mud out at the school farm and made all the boys push, when it got going he hit the gas spraying everyone with mud.  Good times!  Tongue

Yeah, I've been in a bus like that. BigGrin

U.S.45 ran parallel with the Illinois Central tracks in our neighborhood. The Panama Limited went through on it's way to Chicago every morning at the same time our bus took us to grade school. For the first 7 years I rode that bus,it was a K-5 IHC and Bing(the bus driver) always tried to keep up with the train, but of course couldn't come close. In 56 he bought a brand new F-600 Ford bus with what I assume was a 292,4 speed and 2 speed axle. From then on it was a dead heat from where we got on the highway to the little town where the school was located. That bus would run exactly the same speed as the train.95MPH.Great fun!

Ours was a 52 Ford when I was in Jr high, when it rained alot, the plank bridges would be underwater. The older boys would have to get out and walk the runners so the driver could follow them across. Those where the days!

I started school in September of 1950 and rode older ones than that. Today's generation finds it hard to believe that the kids had to get out and push when the bus got stuck, or wait while the driver filed the points or put on a spare. The box on the floor is the heater. There were no ducts to the rear of the bus and a 6 year old kid who didn't speak English always wound up in the back of the bus.
