Both transmissions have the 17 spline input shaft and they are both small case. Thanks for the info about these transmissions!

It should be able to. You would have to plug the holes for the oil lines, install the air cooled converter and air cooled bell housing. Check the spline count on the input shaft and inside the converter turbine as it should either be 17 or 29 splines so that they will mate properly. What is the spline count on the input shaft?

Interesting Marv. The original owner was adamant about the transmission never being worked on or changed. This is an air cooled unit. Can a 57 water cooled one have the early bell and converter put on it to function as an air cooled?

Marv, here's the code from the 56.PAZ-7003-AT.The Warner Gear number is AS2-5X. And I can certainly relate to the Saturday night trips to Swanson's Creamery with the egg production of a couple of hundred hens and the cream from 20 or so Guernseys milked by hand. The PAZ-7003-AT is from a 57 car with a 292 motor by serial prefix of 105. Did it have the spit case steel converter. The 55 trans is like all 55/56 I have seen so most likely original. About the hens and milk cows we were very similar with 500 leghorn hens and 20 shorthorn cross cows all milked by hand every day. Some of those Sunday mornings were very tough until the cow got your attention by swatting you with her stubby tail that had been stepped on and broken off, a real wake up call. marv

Marv, here's the code from the 56.PAZ-7003-AT.The Warner Gear number is AS2-5X.I am positive that this transmission came from the factory in this car.I bought it about 15 years ago from the original owner and he said that it had never been worked on.The data plate on the other transmission has had all the number rubbed off of it,but I am sure that it was an original transmission in a 55 Customline Tudor with a 272.A friend of mine bought the car about 20 years ago with only 22,000 miles on it. Incidentally,I remembered last night that this 56 transmission is out of the same car that supplied the front fender gravel shields I sold you a couple of years ago.And I can certainly relate to the Saturday night trips to Swanson's Creamery with the egg production of a couple of hundred hens and the cream from 20 or so Guernseys milked by hand. Sorry for the screwed up pictures and the long-winded post.

Marv: Neither is T-Bird. Bird's selector lever is vertical.

That shift linkage is different. The ones I have seen look like the 55 trans.
Maybe the t-bird guys will recognize it (I am not familiar with the t-birds
as being from a poor farming community t-birds did not exist due to
the owners having to many kids for a two seater or having to take a crate of
eggs or a can of cream to town).
The dataplate should have a set of letters such as PAW7003, PBL etc.
That will tell me what the trans originally came from. Could you check
on the length of the cast case as the small case were 9 7/8" long and
medium case were 10 7/32"long

Marv, the only numbers still showing on the tag on the 55 transmission are 46847.The 56 tag has I05-30839.The speedometer cable gear drives from the top of the driven gear in the 56 and from the bottom in the 55.The 55 has a coarser spline output shaft than the 56.The 55 has the kickdown lever next to the case and the 56 has the shift lever next to the case.Othewise, externally at least, they are identical.I'll try to post some pictures, but I'm not exactly a computer whiz so I don't know if I can or not.

While I had the two laying side by side I did discover a couple differences in the 55 and 56transmissions that I didn't know about. The speedometer drive placement is different and the shift and downshift levers are reversed and the output shaft splines are different.I guess these are just little things Ford did to make us pay attention!!!!!Interesting, could you shoot us a picture as would like to see that. If you look at the pan are they both the same size, just wondering if one was a medium case like out of a 312 car or Merc. Also by the shift levers is a dataplate with numbers and letters on it could you give those as it will tell what the trans was originally installed in if not original. marv.
