Guys,

What year did Ford change from rear main rope seals to neoprene seals?  Was it a change to all y's on a particular date or did it get phased in over a period of time?

Thanks,

Nick in WI

Nick, the 272-292 neoprene rear seal was introduced by the various gasket makers, Mc cord, Felpro and others probably 20 yrs back as i can recall? not by ford that i know of? The 312 seal is more recent by Best gaskets. Others may have  more accurate info. thank you.

Is the rear main on my '62 292 able to be used either way- with rope or a neoprene seal then?

Thanks,

NIck

Just in case anyone wants to know, I had contacted Best Gaskets after I saw a mention of them making neoprene Rear Main Seals for the 312" in the "Y Not a Y-Block" series in Street Rodder Magazine (I think). At the time they told me they where doing testing in Brazil and not available in the US, yet.

It seemed like a long time after I had talked to Best Gasket that I got a call from Joyce Brothers that the Rear Mains were now available from them. I am assuming Best Gasket gave them my Phone # because I had no idea who they were.

After talking to them it turns out they were in the Oldsmobile restoration business (and a distributor for Best Gasket, Best Gasket couldn't sell to me directly) and were at the time restoring the "HURST HAIRY OLDS".

So, I got my first 3 sets of Best Gasket Rear Main Seals in January 2002. And been using Best Gaskets ever since.

Make sure that the best gasket neoprene seals are both the same width.i had two sets that had one half of the seal to narrow and they leaked.the narrow one was .025 smaler than the other half.Best gasket has corrected the problem but there might be some mismatched ones out there yet,so be sure to check the fit  Carl  Ohio

John, I know Mummert is a Best Dealer NOW... Back in 2002 I didn't know there was a John Mummert or there was an "us". w00t Didn't know of too many people that had Y-Blocks. Best Gasket referred Joyce Brothers to Me, they called me to tell me they were available.Satisfied
