Those are for a tube that supplies heat to the automatic choke. An "L" fitting goes into the passenger side which holds a tube going to the automatic choke. The other side has a little round thing (57). For 56, there was a tube going up into the carb to heat it. Not sure what 55 had.

New tubes are available from the parts suppliers as well as the L fitting and the round thing. Usually are rusted from the exhaust and have to be drilled out.

The HD 292 which could be optioned on the bigger trucks came with manual chokes so there was never a hole drilled for the choke tube.

Thats right. There was a replacement kit for these made by Ford and aftermarket that consisted of a fitting screwed into the exhaust manifold and a "hot air" pipe up to the choke thermostat eliminating the use of the pipe through the intake manifold. There was one on mine installed years ago when I purchased the car. This kit is also shown in my parts catalogue as a "service replacement".

The only problem is if the tube is corroded inside the intake. If it is, then you will have exhaust coming out of the holes as far as I know as the pipe runs in the exhaust crossover.
