Carl: To follow up on what Richard said, in '59 Ford went with the flex plate with the ring gear on it instead of on the converter. On these the converter had 4 studs to attach it to the flex plate.

Bill's right. The early ones were heavy 1/4 thick plates with riveted fixing ears. I believe they changed in '57 to a lighter one piece plate and i think these improved later ones are the only ones available now. If replacing an early type be sure to use the steel packing rings supplied with the new. Cheers Richard UK

Carl as far as i know the early air cooled fordamatic had aluminum converter with a nearly square shaped tin flex plate, the ring gear was on the converter, then came water cooled fordomatic with convential converter and round flexplate with ring gear attached and another fordomatic with 1/4" thick steel plate with 2 opposing spring steel tabs with 3 converter mounting holes in each tab., other guys here can clarify model differences, regards bill.
