Hey guys...

I took it back to the shop - no questions asked - and they pulled the starter and reinstalled using the recommended tightening sequence - and now all is good!

Another thing is did the shop install the 3 shims on the outside of the flywheel rather than mix one in between the the flywheel and crankshaft.



The bolts that mount the flywheeel to the crankshaft that were used on the old style two ear flywheel with three bolts each were 7/16"-20X3/4" long. The bolts used on the new styled four ear flywheel are 7/16"-20X11/16". This is 1/16" shorter.



Did the shop get the rubber starter gasket not in the groove and jammed between the starter and bell housing and is holding the starter cocked instead of flush to bell housing. This would could miss-alignment on the drive to flywheel ring gear.

are they the same length for each bolt, or are there different lenghts?  He should have used the same bolts that came out of it, but if there are different lenghts, may not have gotten them in the right hole....

Might also make sure that the proper bolts were put back in. all it takes is one bolt a little longer to be the culprit. Gerry

Ill have to check that.  I looked in my service manual last night, but didnt find any info on starter alignment.  I will look again.

IIRC, though, there are no shims, correct?  And the mounting flanges arent slotted, are they?  So no room to move/adjust?

Sorry for all the questions - it has been a while since i built it, and im trying to figure out if i need to take it back to the shop that did the work (real pita) or if its something i can just adjust easily with the car on a set of ramps...and how to adjust.

Sorry, my mistake in communicating....

they replaced the flexplate only on a F/M car.  The ring gear is the same one as on the old flex plate, just xferred over to the different, 1-piece stamped flex plate.  Does this make sense?

I'm not aware of a Y-Block flywheel with a different pitch on the ring gear teeth but that's worth looking at.  It would also be worth checking that the replacement flywheel has the same number of teeth as on the flywheel that came off.  With the flywheel already on the vehicle, this is somewhat difficult to check but should be doable by looking in through the inspection cover at the lower front.

I have a '56 sunliner with a 292 in it.  I just had a shop upgrade to the later style 1-piece flex plate, as mine had the knocking sound associated with the rivited ears.  Make sense?

Problem now is that the starter doesnt sound right.  sounds like it isnt aligned properly, particularly in the instant the engine lights off and the strtr drive disengages... 

However, IIRC from when i built the car the 1st time, there isnt a whole lot of room/space to adjust the starter engagement, if at all.  Am I not remembering correctly?  If so, is the newer style flexplate "just different enough" that this is to be expected until things wear in a bit?

I hope all of this makes sense....  im tired.... trying to keep the cars running, working 10 hour days, and trying to adjust to our 1 week old son!!! 

Any help is appreciated!w00t
