Tim's correct, the change over happened in 1960 to the cover that bolts down all the way around insted of the 2 bolt that started in 1952. I have sales brochures that show the change, and also a few Chilton/Motor's annuals that show the same.

If that picture in the page before is a 223, then the 170 also has the manifold on the other side (Passenger Side). So does the 200, I believe.

The 240 and 300 have the intake and exhaust on the other side so I am pretty sure the engines in the P400's are 223's but different valve covers, one is a 59 so maybe the change came in 59? One other item is, didn't they go to the silent lash type rockers around this time? although I haven't had the valve covers off the P400s I was told that they have those style rockers.

I am darn near posative the change came in 1960, I also had a '60 F-100 with a 223 and the bolts were around the valve cover. I also read it somewhere.

My 63 I6 has the bolts on the side...except one thing I noticed was that the cover had holes for four more bolts than the block. I am 95% sure it's the original cover.

I have both '58 and '60 PU's with the 223. "58 valve cover is held on by two top nuts like Y-Block. "60 engine has little bolts along lower edge of cover. So the change would have to occur in either '59 or '60. Easy way to find out is to look up part number for gasket and see which year it changed. The best I can tell without finding my Ford parts catalog is that '52 thru '59 takes one gasket an '60 and later uses another.

I have the 223 I6 in my 64 PU. It has the valve cover hold down bolts around outside perimeter. SO somewhere along the years FORD changed the head. The engine was still available from the factory as the 223 in PU's anyway. This is how it looked when I found it. btw it looks a lot better now, just don't have pics to prove it!

The 223 family of inline six cylinder engines was first introduced for the 1952 models as a 215 cubic incher. The 223 version showed up in 1954 and the larger 262 version was introduced for the 1961 Ford trucks. The 240 & 300 inline six cylinder engines were introduced in the 1965 model year.

I had a 55 customline, and it had a 223 with the two bolt valve cover like yours.
