The 59 I just picked up has the 223 I6 with the 2 hold down nuts like a Y block valve cover. The question is the 2 P400's I have (59 & 61) also have the 223 (I always thought) but the valve covers are bolted around the edges of the flange. When did this change occur if it did and what year did the 223 come out? I saw a 53 Aluminum Bread truck with the 223 over on the HAMB. I thought it came out in 54 with the Y block.

I'm almost positive it was a 1960 model year change. The 215 OHV six was introduced in 1952, and was enlarged to the 223 in 1954.

The 223 came out in 52.For some reason Ford managed to get the OHV six out two years before the eight.I may be wrong,but I think the 223 always had the 2 hold-downs.Didn't the 240 come out in 60 or 61?Maybe that's what is in your other trucks. I'll correct myself.The first 2 years the OHV six was only 215 inches,not 223.

I had a 55 customline, and it had a 223 with the two bolt valve cover like yours.

The 223 family of inline six cylinder engines was first introduced for the 1952 models as a 215 cubic incher. The 223 version showed up in 1954 and the larger 262 version was introduced for the 1961 Ford trucks. The 240 & 300 inline six cylinder engines were introduced in the 1965 model year.

I have the 223 I6 in my 64 PU. It has the valve cover hold down bolts around outside perimeter. SO somewhere along the years FORD changed the head. The engine was still available from the factory as the 223 in PU's anyway. This is how it looked when I found it. btw it looks a lot better now, just don't have pics to prove it!

I have both '58 and '60 PU's with the 223. "58 valve cover is held on by two top nuts like Y-Block. "60 engine has little bolts along lower edge of cover. So the change would have to occur in either '59 or '60. Easy way to find out is to look up part number for gasket and see which year it changed. The best I can tell without finding my Ford parts catalog is that '52 thru '59 takes one gasket an '60 and later uses another.

My 63 I6 has the bolts on the side...except one thing I noticed was that the cover had holes for four more bolts than the block. I am 95% sure it's the original cover.

I am darn near posative the change came in 1960, I also had a '60 F-100 with a 223 and the bolts were around the valve cover. I also read it somewhere.
