Apparently Thunderbird oil pans are different because the owner's manual says five quarts plus a quart for filter. Yes it takes six quarts for 292-312 Thunderbird oil change. Rear sump pan as you may know.

Be careful not to over fill though, over filling blows out seals and causes leaks. Also, one of the greatest causes of  leaking seals is plugged breathers, trannies, rearends, gearboxes etc must be vented properly.

Five quarts with filter….. minimum.  Some of the big truck pans will take more.  With the design of some of the pickup or light truck oil pans and the lack of a baffle to keep the oil from sloshing heavily when stopping, an extra quart of oil might be prudent.

I have always changed the filter and put in 5 quarts. I kind of thought that was the way to check the accuracy of my stick.

With an oil and filter change I would put four quarts in it, start the engine to circulate the oil, shut it off and wait a few minutes to let the oil drain back into the pan and then check the dipstick adding oil until it reaches the full mark. Probably will take five.
