When I went diggin through my gasket set, turns out I had the neoprene - but it didn't take long at all.  Especially when usin the ol' rope seal puller and all that, so I didn't have to drop the crank down at all.  Thanks again folks

Partial answer to your question about the seal.  I've used the Best rear main rope on my flathead V-8 builds and wouldn't consider using anything else.  IMO, they are worth the money.  The knife and spacer + the changes in the rope material make it easy to get a really good cut at the parting surface, which is where I think most of the leaks come from when using a rope.  Your in car job will be harder on the block side but the fact that it will cut readily will be a big help.  On the cap side, you'll love it.  I'll still use the neoprene when available, but nobody loves the flattie enough to do it, yet.  Smile

Bob, I'm having to do the job in chassis. I have the Best rubber seal on hand. However, as I understand it, after it was made available it was discovered that some 312 castings were out of tolerance & the new rubber seal wouldn't work properly. So I want to have the new rope style available, to cover that possibility, avoiding a big delay, when I pull the pan etc.

I was quoted $25.00 for the new Best #5249-A rope style rear main seal. (in Canada) Has anyone used one successfully? Is there any advantage to also using Best's oil pan gasket ($20.00) or their intake manifold gaskets ? ($15.00) I didn't think to ask if they were the heat restricted truck type.




Paul, just curious, why are you using the Best Gasket rope type instead of Best Gasket's neoprene Rear Main Seal? Advantage/disadvantage??

Thanks.. Not sure on the main caps for 272-292. But for the 312s, the Street Rodder series of some years ago recommended not more than 90 ft lb.. A Caution- some very high main torque figures were published in early 1956 for 312s. It resulted in some stripped main threads & worse, cracked block webs!

haha, I'll let ya know tomorrow morning if someone can tell me what the torque should be for the caps....? Anyone? 

You can get a whole best gasket kit on ebay for around 105 bucks when I got mine, though... fyi
