It's not unusual for a cold start to tend toward stalling as oil pressure loading builds up. Particularly if using heavy weight oil.

It wasn't doing this until last changed the oil. I am using that ZDDP additive and a different filter than usual so maybe that's related... Oil pressure is good and I have no leaks, so I guess the only (good) reason I can think of to change the oil pump out would be to solve the hot start idle issue that I'm pretty sure is related. The engine lights with a touch of the key and idles very smoothly for about 3 or 4 seconds. Then the oil pressure gauge indicates climbing oil pressure and the idle deteriorates to where it sounds for all the world like a big camshaft. After I drive it again for a while, all is once again right with the universe. Wonder if the gerotor pumps do this?

It’s not unusual for a spur gear pump to make a light clicking noise if the rotors are tight.  After hearing several of these pumps make that particular noise straight out of the box, I’m no longer concerned when I hear it.  The gerotor style of oil pumps will not make that particular noise though and changing the oil pump out to that design would be one way of eliminating the noise.

My 292 with about 30,000 miles on a rebuild is equipped with the gear type oil pump, and I use 15W-40 oil. Oil pressure is 70+ when cold and 55-60 psi at freeway speeds when hot. When the engine is overnight cold, the oil pump makes a noise with engine speeds over about 2,000 rpm that sounds a bit like your 3/8 drive ratchet when it gets spun quickly. Not as loud as that, and it goes away within the first 5-minutes of operation. Also, when the hot engine is re-started after sitting for a half hour or so, it idles a little rough after the oil pressure comes up, though this symptom seems to improve after driving it again for a while.

Play in the pump gears? Would using the later rotor style pump reduce or eliminate these symptoms? Distributor is a one year old MSD.
