Welcome to the forum. You have reached the center of the Y block planet. A friend of mine passed away back in the early 80's and left me a 41 K1 pickup. No engine but a straight rust free truck from Silver Springs, Nevada. I had to finally let it go because of no place to keep it and no money to treat it right. A perfect candidate for a blown Y block. Good luck with your project and the help folks give here will make for a fun build.

Welcome to the site.  This is the best forum I have ever participated in while working on cars.  Nice to know that there is someone else named Rex in the forum.  This forum has helped tremendously with my project.  Just dig through the old posts you will find a lot of good stuff.

A blown Y in an International?!?!? I love itBigGrin... But I would think 10-15lbs of boost would be easier to get out of a 6-71 blower than a 4-71 i would imagine.. Either way good luck and welcome to the site.. you will find an absolute wealth of knowledge here and a great group of guys willing to share it..

Welcome to the site Rex!  You asked about heads, the 471 and EDB-D or E heads are best for blown engines although 10 -15lbs boost may be too much as the heads have a problem with lifting.  Posted heads help (all the above #s are) and so does installing 1/2", studs but that is a lot of boost.

Nice FE, by the way, in the '59. Smile

Welcome to the site!!! You won't be disappointed with the amount of information everyone has and the network of all Y-block knowledge! It has been a life saver for me! Check out John Mummerts site as well.

www.ford-y-block.com

He has blown y's, and plenty of info as well as the previously mentioned websites. Good luck with everything.

Loving my Y!

Hi, welcome to the best site...look thru the links and get on Bruce Young's Y-BLOCK Magazine mailing list. Loads of info available in the back issues and always something new with every  edition. Ted Eaton has built a blown Y for Randy G.'s record holding dragster... high 7's in the 1/4,I believe. Jerry Christenson used to run a Weiend(sp) or B&M blown 56 fiberglass t-bird in the High 9's. You'll find here factory-style blown Y's... Frank Rice...John's HoosierHurricane.  Stick around and these guys will willingly give you all kinds of info. You'll probably want one of Ted's Moldex billet cranks for a good foundation to begin with.  Have fun!   Barry L

Hey everyone!  Just wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions.

My name is Rex Carter and I'm located in Cedar Rapids, IA. I've been thinking about building a blown y block for my 1936 International PU.  I've built one 312 for my Dad's 56' Thunderbird so I'm not new to the Y Block but I know their is alot more to learn.  This was basically a stock rebuild with an E-4 Isky Cam, 57' Four barrel intake and Mallory dist. I also own and 1959 F100 with a 428 FE.  Here's a pic, It's a work in progress too...

Right now I'm in the process of researching parts for the build of my International but before I go out and randomly start buying things I have a few questions.

First off these are my plans for the engine:

292+ Cubic inch (Would like to see 450-500 ish hp (tell me if I'm nuts))

Heads?  Would love a set of the Mummert Heads but we'll see if the budget allows

Steel Truck Crank, H Beam rods, Forged pistons ~8.5: Comp

Schneider Cam (probably a custom ground blower cam), DOVE Rockers?

4-71 Roots Blower w/ a 2 port Hilborn Mechanical Injection set up (may give E-85 a shot) Overdriven looking for 10 - 15 lbs boost. Custom Sheetmetal Intake and drive

Vertex Magneto

Custom Headers

Going to either run a wide ratio BW T-10 or a Toploader and a quick change for the rest of the drivetrain.

-I want to start out with a solid foundation an I was wondering which 292 block would be the best?  After reading Ted Eaton's articles it looks like he choose the later block for his Blower Motor but after reading John Mummert's website he suggested sticking to the earlier blocks that have thicker cylinder walls.  Which is the best way to go for a blower engine?  I don't plant on stroking or boring the engine to much; I'm going to let the blower make up for the lack of cubic inches.

-Are any of you running a main girdle of any kind? Or is their even one avalaible?

-Any suggestions on a cam?  This is my first blown engine so I'm not up on the blower cams.

Like I said I'm just in the planning stages so this is all thoretical...so don't be afraid to give me your opinions.

Thanks in advance, Rex
