Greetings everyone,

I just bought a '55 Country Sedan Wagon. Unfortunately, the previous owner lost the tailgate hardware for the car. I have no clue as to what parts I even have to look for in able to close/lock my tailgate. I have seen a few pictures online but only from the outside. Could someone please post a picture(s) of what I need. Does the licence plate bracket/light have anything to do with the lower tailgate operation; I noticed the bracket is hinged? Any clues as to where I could find the parts I need?

Thanks for any help.

As a guy who loves wagons there is a coupla ways to go .

First would be to acquire the two Ford 1949-1959 books. There two you will need are the Parts Illistrartions and then the Text books.

The Illistrations will show the pictures of what you need along with the parts group numbers, then you go to the Text book to find the refered to group number and ultimatly the part# needed.

I could photoCopy the picture of the tailgate in the Illistrations Manual and send it to you. That should get you started.

Hey Oldmics,

I would really appreciate you sending me that photo copy. This will give me an idea of what I am looking for until I find my own set of books and drawings.

Thanks for the help.

OK third try to respond… Elvis, which parts do you need? For the Lift Gate or Tailgate (or license plate linkage)?? I have a ’55 Customline Ranch Wagon and have been through the search for parts for them. I don’t have any spare parts but maybe I can steer you in the correct direction?? The Long Roofs are getting kind of hard to find sowe need to keep them out there… Good Luck.

First of all, thanks for all the great info that you all have provided so far.

After a bit more detective work, I have a little better understanding of what I need. For the liftgate, I just need the exterior handle. For the lower tailgate, I need whatever handle and hardware attach to the mechanism inside the tailgate. After my investigation this afternoon, I concluded that the license plate bracket pivots when the tailgate is lowered but I don't know what it is supposed to be attached to within the tailgate or what parts I need to do this.

So what else am I missing? Should there be a lock cylinder anywhere in this setup?

Here are a few pics of what I currently have.

Looking down at tailgate (top of tailgate is at bottom of picture)

Liftgate just missing exterior handle and lock?

I have a 56 wagon that I am parting. I am in Houston at the moment, but if you don't find anything in the meantime, I can photograph what its supposed to look like when I'm home Wednesday. I bought the car for the drive train and front clip. I have no interest in wagons.

do you have a license plate bracket ? Iam wondering what goes between the body and the metal light housing. I bought one off ebay. I think there must be another part that goes between the bracket and body..

The link is to pictures of a wagon tailgate. On the upper part, there is a piece of chrome that has a push button on the right to open it and on the left you lift a little door to expose the lock cylinder. On the bottom, the license bracket is connected to the license plate light fixture which is hinged. When you lift the entire bracket, the bottom part of the tail gate unlocks. The one pictured is a 56. I have another top and bottom which I assume to be a 55 because it has the word overdrive which I think was last used in 55. The two units look identical.
