Ok, that makes sense. I didn't see the marking on the plate but will re-index it to the 12:00 position.

That plate is usually stampe "top" which goes on in the 12-o-clock position.If not stamped the openinings in the plate go on in the 12-o-clock position.This prevents oil in the block from draining back into the filter when not running  and prevents "dry" starts.

Is there a wrong way to install the large round plate that goes between the oil filter face and the block ? Specifically regarding the oval hole that is in the plate. I installed mine with the oval hole clocked to 6:00 ( facing the oil pan ) but saw a picture in one of the Y block books with it at 12:00 ( facing up )

It primed right up to 75psi with the drill ( new motor ) but I want to be sure before I put the motor back in.
