Does anyone know of a shop that specializes in Y block port and polishing heads?  Checked with Mummerts and they are so busy they declined.  Local shops don't do many Y blocks.  I do not need race quality just more flow.  Going to rebuild a 292 for my 60 4x4.  Should I attempt this myself?  I don't want to screw it up.  Appreciate any advice.

i know just enough about porting heads to stay away from it.its an art all its own.people have porting heads forever and im sure 90% end up with less than they started with.

Polish wouldnt be indicated.  As for porting, it seems like you will have to be turning very high rpms to justify that as well, meaning that compression and cam have already been delt with.

Some porting can improve on the quality of the airflow into the cylinder and thus improve performance over a broad range, rather than just at high revs but it's best left to someone with experience.

Simple things like port matching, polishing the chambers, and blending under the seats can be done easily at home and provide noticeable gains. Leave any major reworking of the ports to a pro - unless you just want to do some experimenting and have some time, and money to spend (possibly less than paying to have them ported), and possibly several sets of heads.

I have found that even mild engines can benefit from head work.. Y block heads respond well to simple porting, and a really good valve job. I have had Les Schmader do MEL and Lincoln Y heads for me and been very satisfied. His work is reasonable, and he has done Y blocks before.
