so my project is a 59 ford f100 and i was planning on building a 300 horse 292 for it but then i got a brilliant idea. My brilliant idea is to stretch it 24 inches with suicide back doors to make a sort of ext cab. This will obviously require a custom frame and lots of work. This would also add weight and after all im 19 and want this thing to have some go power. So then i thought well i have that 390 block out in storage so ill just build it up and stick it in there. So im afraid i have to confess that i will be replacing the Y-block with an FE. Don't worry tho im still planning on keeping the y-block and building it to go in a open motored hot rod sort of deal where the beauty of this engine can be seen.

Whatever rocks your boat.
At least the 390 is a close sibling of the Y Block.
This is from the Wikipedia article on FE engines.
The FE and FT engines are Y-block designs—so called because the cylinder block casting extends below the crankshaft centerline, giving great rigidity and support to the crankshaft's bearings. In these engines, the casting extends 3.625 in (92.1 mm) below the crankshaft centerline, which is more than an inch below the bottom of the crank journals.

Yeah, well my 57 f100 sits on a f350 frame ,has dana 60s front and back and has 33s on it.Oh and yes it is a 4x4.It has a mild 292 ,c4,np205 transfer case. This thing is a TANK,HEAVY,and goes right up everything I try in it.Has more than enough power, hangs with the scrubs, and all the b.s. big blocks.I had a real good running 351w and took it out to replace it with the 292.I doubt adding an extra door is going to be heavier than a one tone frame and running gear.Mine has plenty of getty up and go!Stick with the 292.

59flatbedford (5/3/2010) My brilliant idea is to stretch it 24 inches with suicide back doors to make a sort of ext cab. This will obviously require a custom frame and lots of work.Have you done anything like this before? Make sure you know what it means. I hate to see vehicles get cut up because of brilliant ideas to never be finished because it was not understood what the execution of that brilliant idea entailed. I think "lots of work" is an understatement. The Y in a hot rod sounds good.

well i have never acutally done a full cut and extend before but im doing my research and coming up with a plan and thinking everything out before i ever touch the truck. that way i can be sure it will get finished. This truck needs all new floors and i have done sheetmetal work before so i have a pretty good idea of what im getting into.
