Was helping a friend fire up a 1956 ford 223 six today. Motor had not been run in sometime. Had a trans pressure gauge plumbed into the oil gallery.

Once fired, the gauge hit almost 200psi, and blew the canister gasket out before we could shut it down. We are assuming the relief is stuck closed, but is there any other obvious causes that we should look at?

I hope you don't mind a 223 question. Thanks for any advice,

Was the oil filter the old one on the engine? If so the filter relief valve could also be stuck.

had exactly the same thing happen in the day on a 170 6cyl.  Not the same family but the result was.  Kept popping the gasket on the spin on filter and in frustration, I tightened the filter up with a filter wrench.  Started it and it didn't leak at idle so I revved it up a little.  Was just starting to feel happy when I happened to look down at the filter.  It was swollen like a pumpkin (Fram orange) and was still growing.  Scared the hell out of me.  Shut it off, pulled the pan and the oil pump, found a small piece of aluminum jamming the relief valve shut.  Amazing what cold 30 wt. oil will do.  Smile
