Trying to get initial timing before breaking in the cam, I reached a dilemma. I'm not sure which is the compression and exhaust stroke... I took off the passenger side valve cover, and am on TDC. I'm confused because it looks like on the heads, the exhaust and intake valves alternate. Am I right? If I am, I have the timing down at 5 degrees, I know it should be at like 12, but I just want to get the came broken in.

Cyl #, Left valve, Right valve

1 ,compression, intake

2 ,intake,compression

3 ,compression, intake

4 ,intake,compression

I'm not sure what you are getting at but the Y head has a valve arrangement of ex-in-in-ex-ex-in-in-ex (intake and exhaust) if you are looking for the compression stoke on #1 watch for overlap on #6 (exhaust valve almost closed and intake just opening, rockers just about even.)  Is this what you are asking?

hmm ive always just pulled the spark plugs and stuck my finger in the hole of #1 and turn the motor by hand till it just stops blowing air out (compression stroke) and timed from their. but im lazy.
