I am wondering if there is a formula that when you machine the deck and tru up the heads that would tell how much to remove off the intake so the intake bolts would not have interferance with the intake? Thanks Bill.

1.4 times the amount removed from the head/block.  I have that amount milled from the head intake surface so that intake manifolds can be  swapped without additional milling.

Just wondering if the new alum. manifolds might have some special provision (since many will go on modified engines) that would allow for more latitude than OEM when installing?

Since you are supposed to machine the intake surface of the head (not the intake) as Hoosier mentioned, latitude in the intake is not necessary.

Thanks John.I have a Blue thunder intake and it does not align real good.I saw Jerry Cristenson at back to the 50's and said like you ,that the intake side of the head should be machined when the work was done but he didn't remember the ratio.I will remove the heads and try to figure out how much was removed.I assembled the motor in 04 and now I am putting my Merc back back togeather it was a frame up resto. Thanks again.Bill.

WPN, There is a square boss on the exhaust side, which is supposed to measure 1.00" The difference between that and what it actually measures is what has been milled from the head.
