The casting numbers on these transmissions are T85N-1B and the OD units are R11-1W.  They also have some numbers stenciled on them in yellow paint.  It looks like the stencil says 8W3AIS or the last digit could be a 5.  The left hand portion of the A could also be a slash mark.  They have a U joint type yoke at the end of the output shaft instead of a slip type mating.  John F. says this indicates that they are a truck application.  I would like to convert them, or one of them, or find a home for them.

I picked up the two OD transmissions today.  I have a picture if anyone would like to look at them.  They have a shorter tail housing than shown for a T-Bird.  I don't know if Bird OD housings are longer than passenger cars.  I can e mail a picture to you if I have your e mail address.  I tried to post a picture to the forum and can pull it up, but can't seem to attach it.  I am looking for a side plate and the flange that goes around and retains the input shaft.  The mounting ears look larger and they have two bolt patterns, probably for differrent applications.

Thanks,

John and Frank,

I don't have the T-85's in my possession yet.  I'll send info when I have them.

Thanks,

Paul,

What is the output spline size? I have parts of an r-11 and i know for a fact it came from a truck. Other than the output dimensions and case length everthing else interchanges with my pass r-11.

Paul:

I don't know of a list, or know the applications, but I do know the R10s were used on the small transmissions, like the T96, and the R11 was used on the T85s.  The R10 planetary set has 3 pinions, the R11 has four, as well as a larger diameter output shaft.

Is there a listing of Borg Warner T-85 types manufactured and their applications?  I think the OD's are T-85N's and there are R-10 and R-11 versions.  Some are passenger car and others are truck applications.  Is a R-11 1W a truck version?

Thanks
