I pulled a doozie, can't remember if I used a dextron oil or a type f, any grave issues with mixing the two? Gary

Sorry to say but adding Dextron to a Ford tranny can cause damage. In short Fords require a friction modifier that helps the clutches/bands to grip and the GM fluid lacks this additive. If you didn't run it far you can do a fluid change and you should be ok.

Actually one of the Dextrons is the replacement for Type A which I didnt know until Marvh told me.I always thought Type F was the replacement.Maybe Marv will exp;ain which Dextron when he sees this post.

  

Yes, there is a multi-use fluid. Hope he was lucky enough to pour that in!

The Type F // Dextron/Mercon debate has always made me wonder what anyone should be able to use in a Fordomatic.



I called a friend of mine that rebuilds automatic transmissions for a living and he told me that you MUST use Type F in a Fordomatic if is equipped with the older type "brass" clutches (his words).



If it's equipped with the more modern type of clutch material, then you can use Dextron/Mercon type fluids.

Thats what I think I used, a multi,I found a bottle, it said for vehicles after 83. It doesn't slip, smokes em off the stop lights, just was gonna top it off, got a 350 mile ride down to Ill. for a car show. I'll just leave it alone, a stick is going into it in a couple of months anyway. Gary

I just found the info I got ftom Marvh.If the trans is original(not recent rebuild) Marv suggested Dextron 3.If its rebuilt check with the supplier as to what he recommends.

The TBird suppliers recommend Dexron III - I believe there is no "T"

Paul-you are 100% correct.I did find a couple of articles on the internet with the "T" though.
