The Ford electronic trigger unit for the Durspark II is really hard to beat - and it is readily retrofited into the Y-block distributors produced after 1957. There are numerous reference posts on this forum - if you need help - send me a PM. The trigger is superior because it makes its own power -the reluctor / armature spins in a permanent magnet field and makes an AC pulse at 1/2 engine rpm x 8 - the only thing that can stop it is a broken lead wire. A diode in the controller chops it into a binary "on" and "off" - and a timing chip does the rest (operates a power transistor to ground the coil).

Once you have a trigger that works - all sorts of controllers will operate the coil - this is an induction style system so the trigger and controller are just basically replacing a set of points. The power transistor mentioned earlier - governs just how many amps the controller can handle.

Three relatively cheap controllers are available - Ford, GM and Chrysler all made one. Charlie's outfit has a MOPAR style controller with a Ford trigger,  I've run mine with Duraspark II controllers and a GM HEI "four pin" - I think the Ford set-up is superior at idle - but the GM arrangement can make big sparks "upstairs". The Ford units are designed with two things I like - (1) at start-up it detects the starter solenoid operation and retards spark 6° and (2) Dwell is fixed at 26° which gives plenty of spark at low rev's. I believe total resistance - for the coil primary and ballast resistance needs to be 1.2 OHMs or more - or the transistor in the Ford controller will die.

The GM four pin runs the dwell down at low rpm (15°) to keep things cool and then keeps jacking it up as the rev's go up (35°). Because the GM system can (and will) change dwell timing to limit amperage - it can run a coil with no ballast resistor.

The best thing about adapting the "big three" parts - is that they are available cheap and install quickly (on any Sunday afternoon). I could change my controller for a spare in about 15 minutes and that would include opening the trunk. No burnt fingers or slaving over the engine either. The aftermarket versions - like the MSD - Pertronix are neither cheap to buy or convenient to replace.

It was worth figuring out how to build this system and maintain it - all of the regular distributor tuning tricks still work - centrifugal advance changes, vacuum pot adjustments, etc.

Is there a better choice out there for a "Y"?

Yes and maybe no.

The big benefit of Pertronix and the MSD is that no external box is required.

You can upgrade yours to Duraspark but it will require an external box of some sort however it is a cost effective way to get an electronic ignition. As far as aftermarket stuff goes, Performance Distributors in Memphis, TN can build you a Duraspark distributor. It's built a little better than a stock Duraspark distributor. They don't have it listed on their website but most of the others are $265.00. I imagine the Y will be pretty close. It's what I'm using with their aftermarket box but I got it for helping them develop the system and so I have no idea what the price is. The original plan was to fit a GM HEI style but that just didn't work out. Not enough room, even in a truck. So far, it works great and hasn't left me stranded.

I have a Pertronix equipped distributor.

I have been considering an MSD "Billet etc" type. ($350++)

Is there a better choice out there for a "Y"?

Eddie - The parts come from late seventies to late eighties Fords - like a Mustang 5.0. Visit NAPA and start looking in boxes....It takes three parts - an adapter ring - a taller/longer rotor and a HEI type studed cap.

The black spacer in this picture is the adapter ring that goes up to the HEI style cap with stud terminals. It clips down  with the original cap clips - and provides a second set of clips for the larger cap. The better HEI caps have brass studs - necessary for a long run - my ignition "eats" the aluminum studs, erodes them away from poor connection and electrical discharge.

I don't believe the Ford distributor is as tall as the MSD and cap clearance to the head is close.

Put a Duraspark cap and rotor on it.

Good Mornin'    Need to change my dist. back from MSD to 57 Ford dist. (for testing)  Question-- is there a cap that will fit the 57 dist. that I do not need to change the plug wires?? Want to use the MSD wires without having to change the ends going to the dist cap!!!   MSD wires are female, but Ford dist are male??     Many thanks--  sure appreciate all of you folks!!!      God Bless   Eddie
