PerTronix sells a 12-volt coil with internal resistor/1.5 ohms that is designed to be used with the original Pertronix Ignitor without an external resistor. The part number is 40011. I have one on my 312 and it works fine. Ron

The Pertronix Ignitor I is designed to be used with a resistor while the Pertronix Ignitor II and Ignitor III modules are designed to work on a sraight 12 volts or without a resistor.

Should be stamped on outside of coil casing.

Thanks guys for your help. I am not sure what the ohm rating. It is the stock coil. Is it safe to bypass the resistor when using the Pertronix electronic ignition?
Thanks again

Check the coil you are using for rating. If it has 1.5 ohm or higher rating(most do and it tells you on the outside of coil) you dont need the resistor.

Nat If I understand correctly, yes, the wire from your ignition switch and the red wire to your Pertronix goes on one end of your ballast resistor, then from the other end of the resistor a wire goes to the positive side of your coil. The black wire of your Pertronix goes onto the negative side of your coil. Cheers Gt

I had to put my stock yellow top Ford coil back on (my Pertronix was leaking oil). I had bypassed my resistor as it was not needed with the pertronix. I am still running the Pertronix electronic ignition. Do I hook the the RED BATTERY WIRE from the firewall and RED PERTRONIX RED WIRE together, plug it in at the bottom of the resistor and then connect a wire from the top of the resistor the positive side of the coil?
