an update...
my buddy put a new 2bbl holley on his 292 in his 60 edsel and it now runs like a champ. cruised it this weekend at all speed ranges and everything is running fine. so a lot of it was the tune up, timing and distributor, but the final straw was the carb.
2 weeks ago he had the trans fluid changed and filter cleaned, and it does not slip into 2nd gear anymore.
so he is now very happy with the way it is driving. hopefully this week he will have the valves adjusted.

ok guys,
my buddy test drove his edsel yesterday, since the new distributor and wires. so now it has a new distributor and total tune up.
he said it drive way better, but still has a slight studder when cruising at a steady speed like 40-60mph. but he said it has cleared up about 90% of it. he is very happy with it now.
still didnt drop the trans pan and clean the filter, but hopefully by this coming weekend.
will let you knwo how that goes..

Have you adjusted the bands on this yet?If you drain it dont forget to take 2 plugs out of the convertor.Take one out and then turn it 180 and take out the second one.

thanks much mark. i will forward this to my buddy and let you knwo what he does.
the trans currently has a slip when going from 1-2 under a heavy take off, so he may want the harder shifting with the "F" fluid. we are hoping some new fluid and filter will take care of the slip. (fingers crossed).

I refilled mine with type "F". and it works fine. However I was told later that Dextron3 is the better choice as the "F" will give a little harsher shift. If you are completely draining it I would refill with the Dextron. One of the members-Marvh,who is an ex ford mechanic was the one to recommend the Dextron. If you do a search on "fordomatic transmission fluid" there are about 3-4 posts on the topic.

hello again guys.
been busy lately with my own hot rod, so been putting off working on my friends 60 edsel.
another friend worked on it today, installing the distributor and a new set of wires. they didnt have time to take it for a test drive, but should later this week.
i thought i asked some questions here about his auto trans, but cant fnd the posts. so i got some questions.
we know its a 2 speed ford-o-matic, and his manual says to use "TYPE A" fluid, but at the auto parts store they say to use 'TYPE F", and even on the bottles it says for 1950's and 60's ford automatic transmissions. and they dont even carry the "TYPE A" fluid.
so, will he be ok in using the "F" fluid ?
also, i guess he will know when he takes the pan down, but he has been getting conflicting stories on whether the trans filter is a "clean and reistall" type filter, or just put a new one in. what type of trans filter is in the ford-o-matic trans ?
where can he order one from ? the local autozones, and even NAPA get all weirded out when you say the work "edsel".
thanks in advance guys.
