I have a friend who has a 312 in a rusty `56 Merc, may want to do some trading on some 351C 4V stuff I have. Supposedly, the 312 runs, has an MSD distrib, some other goodies. My question is, how good are the heads on a `56 312, and are they comparable to a pair of ECZ-G heads? If not, are they worth anything trade-wise? Further specifics such as valve sizes etc would be appreciated. I have been going back and forth trying to decide what I want to do with my Ford, and it is down to a 390 FE and a 312 Y. Any pointers on this I would appreciate greatly. I just got the rear end of my Ford put back the way it was before I minitubbed it, lots of welding, replacing, etc., and am seriously considering the Y. Help me along with my decision, gents....

James, I think it would have come with C heads orginally but you will have a better chance at the "boats" than finding an orginal untouched engine. If the engine runs good, don't worry about it, I have G heads that you can get. If you decide aganist trading for it, find out what you can get it for and let me know.

James; First you need to confirm what heads are actually on the engine. At this point in time the heads have often been switched by rebuilders. No telling what they are. Need to check the casting numbers.

I hadnt thought about that. I am pretty sure that at least the short block is original to the car, prob the heads too. Still, it is over 50 years old, and may have been swapped, as I know it has been overhauled sometime in the past, has aftermarket gaskets anyway. I will be working with that this week if I can, have some job and family issues working right now, so we'll see how it all works out. As soon as I cqn get some numbers off the heads I'll get them posted.
