I have a 55 Ford Fairlane V8-272 bored to 292, I have a Model #4000 R1074A ECK-9510T 4 barrell Holly Carb.

I replaced the vacum advance and my problem wasn't fixed which is the car starts fine but when you put it in drive it dies like it is getting too much air or not enough gas, The plugs are new along with a new dist. cap and rotor button and newly timed and I have a Petronix ignition to replace the points. 

The dashpot and rod that attaches to the gas throttle, goes through the carb and attaches to the choke control, dashpot rod has a lot of play in it on the pot side and the choke control side .

Could this play in the rod allow too much air through the choke system that would cause this problem.

Also if carb is bad , does anyone have any ideas as a brand I could replace the tpot carb with the least amount of adaptation and cost?

I had what sounds like a similar problem recently.  The throttle rod was worn enough to creat a vacuum leak so the engine didn't run well at all.  Easy to check.  With the engine running spay some carb cleaner around the opening on the outside of the carb where the throttle rod goes through.  If the engine smooths out for a moment then you have a vacuum leak.  Those rods can be fixed/replaced but apparently a special drill set up is required and the trick is finding someone who has one and knows how to use it.  I'd check all other possible sources of vacuum lead the same way.

Oh, forgot to say that in my case it was a Ford/autolight 2 barrel carb, but Holley is probably the same.  As to carb recommendations, I fought carb problems on my 57 Bird (power valves, float settings, etc.) for years before getting rid of the Holley and putting on an Edlebrock.  Zero problems since and the thing never ran so well.

The car starts and idles fine but dies when you put it in gear unlass the choke is pulled all the way out then the motor won't die, after getting started I can push the choke in and the cars runs great but when I come to a stop I have to pull out the choke to keep it running. Weird.

Are you trying to idle the engine too slow?  Pulling the choke not only enriches the mixture, it increases the idle speed.  Maybe the increased speed is what keeps it from dying.

The #4000 R1074A ECK-9510T 4 barrel Holly Carb is off a 55 Ford with Power pack. It should have an automatic choke with the choke thermostat on the intake manifold. Have you converted it to manual?



The throttle shaft can be bushed with brass bushings. Throttle shaft wear is very common on the Quadrajet.

I take my carbs to a local fellow who mainly works on the Quadrajet and have him re-bush the Autolites or teapots. Wear usually occurs if one has used a too heavy throttle spring during its lifetime and most often occurs on the choke side.

It costs me C$60.00 with new bushings installed.



I think you may have a blockage in your idle circuit. I would take the screws out and use a can of carb cleaner with the plastic tube to blow through the passage. Can be as John said idling to slow also.



On a side note that particular carb you are using may have too hefty a power valve as the power packs used a #43 I would use something like a #28. Could be a fuel hog.



Teapots can be made to run very well, they are however very finicky. Unless you want to be concours I would look at replacement.

A good replacement for the teapot using the "A"manifold is the Carter WCFB as it has the same base size and uses the the same loadomatic distributor. These were used on some of the 56 Merc's. If you use any other carb you will have to change the distributor. Other option is to go the 57 up route with the "B" manifold, later distributor and modern carb.

I changed my teapot /flame pot for a 57 ford intake and a 390 cfm holley 4 barrel carb and didn,t have to change anything else run,s great but don,t over carb!!!!!bigger is not the way to go use the kiss rule !!!  shakey

no I didn,t it runs great ,would like to get a newer style from a 57 or ? but have had no problems, smooth as silk and pretty good on fuel  shakey
