There is a machine shop near my home that has a 312 (have not checked #'s) that has been in their shop since the 80's. Someone dropped it off and they freshened it and the customer never picked it up. All new parts are there to complete the short block but it has not been assembled. There are no heads but they said that have a set of 292 heads that were never picked up. I am wondering if I should buy just so I can have one more heavy, bulky item laying around my garage that I don't need or pass on it. They mentioned they might be in the $6-800 range for the short and the heads.



Any recommendations and what to look for as far as casting #'s?

Find out exactly what "freshened" means, how much bore, bearing, size, etc. Might spend the $ or get a Guarantee from them about magnafluxing to assure it's not cracked. Or the extra mile would be to sonic check too. Check on Mummerts site for all the numbers and you can exactly id it. mite be worth it depending on the machine work that "may" have been done.

Good machine work isn't cheap.

just my HO, but the 312 to me is no longer any big deal because of what can be done with the 292 and a 312 OR NOT crank.

Just wanted to add that surely they wouldn't freshen an engine that WAS cracked, But you never know.To me if you think about it someone who was doing that engine maybe back in the 80's might have just been trying to get by with it as opposed to building some optimal deal like we are sometimes known to do on this site. Theres nothing wrong with that, heck they could have just slapped in a new set of rings and honed it for example and it would have worked great.. Just might help you justify what you might pay for it.

I don't think it needs to be 'fluxed either, they would not have put all that work into a cracked block. I do know that it was bored .030 (Jahn's pistons come with it), and that the cam bearings are in freeze plugs, things like that. They have a new cam and lifters, the crank was ground (I assume 10/10) and the rods were 'fluxed and sized. Everything was balanced and they have all the bearings and gaskets. I think they might even have the oil pump.

It's sounding better already. Are those Jahns pistons domed at all. Cam lifters and oil pump make it all a better deal.

There is more than $800 in parts at todays prices not to mention the labor. Look at it close, but sounds like a race horse deal to me.
