I have some Autolite 2100s, and Motorcraft 2150s carburetors in my garage, that I bought at a swap meet. Some of them are really dirty, due to being in stoorage for a long time, and others are just corroded, due to a very very long time of inactivity.

I've seen carburetors like mine being cleaned to like new condition. What can I do to the carbs? I believe it was not sandblasting, but the results are close. All external parts will be sent to be refinished/galvanized. The main bodyes are my doubt.

What do you guys sugest?

Best thing if you can get use of one is an ultrasonic cleaner. An old dishwasher does a great job ( new one too, but can lead to divorce w00t ). Mike

I'm not sure what you have in the way of "parts houses" in Brazil, but here many of them sell carb cleaner in a bucket that has it's own dipping basket inside. I got mine at NAPA. Disassemble the carb,place the pieces in the basket and soak it in the bucket. the parts docome out really clean. when i did my holly 94's I bought detail carb paint from the Eastwood Company and detailed the air horn, float bowl and base and they came out really nice. The eastwood carb paint is specially formulated and doesn't dissolve with fuel. Anyway, just another option to consider.

Around here we have some brands of carb cleaners, like STP, Castrol, and Car80. They do a good job, but I'm looking for something that can restore that "like new" look to the main body of the carb. The Car80 is the best, but costs a fortune. I sent a carburator to a professional some years back, and eventually learned how to work on the carbs myself, but never could get the same appearence he got. It looked almost like a aluminium paint. Some time ago, I bought a 1.14 from a fellow forum member, and the carb has the same finish the rebuilder did around here.



This one was the nicest one. After the dirt got out, I found a gret carb hidding there, all threads are perfect, no play on the axle at all, and the base is super plane, just like new. The only odd thing was the fuel intake, that was a "custom job" by the previous owner. I replaced it with an original from my parts box.

The appearence is the best I could do, and I'n not quite happy with it. Wanted something nicer.

Rono, I'm pretty sure ita was not a paint. The Eastwood paint is rare around here, and would be a nice option. If I can't get the kind of finnish that I want from cleaning, I'm gona order some paint.

Painting rebuilt carbs was somewhat common.  When, I am not certain, but several have surfaced.  The paint that was used is almost impossible to get off unless it is media blasted.  Hate the old stuff, dont know about Eastwood's.

I've resorted to a multiple step process.  It involves Chem Dip Soak, Careful media blast with Dum Dum used to seal sensitive air bleeds and openings, and finally polishing as much of the body and top that I can get to with a buffing wheel.  Lots of compressed air, gas rinses, and at least one can of carb cleaner per carb.

The local Big Lots store carries carburetor cleaner.  At $1.80 per can each order sells out fast.  Today they had a few left, so they all went into my cart.

This summer I bought a used counter top dish washer to try on the carbs after the worst of the grime was off.  But still havent used it.

Mike, this carb came new on a Maverick, with a 302 (introduced in Brasil as a '73 model)

By the way, there is a catalog where I can research the Motorcraft/Autolite codes?

I got one for cleaning for a friend, taht I never had seen before. It's from a '81 Galaxie, with a alcohol engine.

If I remember correctly it was marked 5dsaz. The carb weighted a ton, never had seen one like that, since Ford only used the Motorcraft on alcohol engines for a few months, after what the changed to a Webber made here under licence by DFV. That one was chrome plated to resist the corrosion of the alcohol.
