I heard that the 312 was last used in the 60 merc and found a 60 wagon in a local junkyard that has a Y block,it has a 2 bbl carb and would that be correct for that car and since 60 is when the heads went to the smaller valves in the Fords would that be the same with the merc.  I would like to get it for the crank and do need a set of better heads for a 292 but dont know if I want to go though all the trouble to get the motor out if it has the small valve heads since trees would need to be cut down to get at it,I am going back next saturday and will look it over more closely.

The Merc's used the 312 up to 1960 as the base engine. I am not sure. but as the base engine it probably had a 2bbl. AS far as the heads go, I don't know.

Any 312 is worth some money. I would get it out and if you need only the crank you could sell the rest of the engine.

The motor had alot of leaves on top of it so I will have to do some cleaning to see what it is,I was suprised the carb still had the tag and if the part number starts with B9 or C0 then its original.  Its not going to be easy to get out as it been sitting for many years and is grown up around it.

Assuming the price is right, it is worth a go for the crank and block alone.  Everything else is gravy or salvage.  Heads are probably cracked.

Since the hood was still on and the carb still on it might not be too bad inside but getting it out will be hard due to it being face in on the row and the trees around it,its been sitting many years with no roof and would fall apart if moved but maybe that might help.  I will look it over more closely next saturday.

JunkYardJeff, Not that it would help you any be if you could, could you take a couple pictures? I enjoy pictures like that, of old and/or abandoned cars and trucks for some reason. Their last resting place, before they are moved, before they are gone forever

If too much trouble, that's cool.

Jeff: If the 60 has the correct block in it (?) it should be casting # B9AE- F. Probably marked under the exhaust manifolds. However, apparently that isn't guaranteed either. There's a small chance it was switched out for a 292 with the same casting #. If no trans in the car, you could look at the crank flange. Usually they have a short 5/16" dia. dot in the shallow cut out. Other than that, you need the pan off. Rods will be marked ECZ. No easy way in those circumstances unfortunately.

Its missing the drivers side exhaust manifold so I can check for a casting number, unfortunately it still has the trans so the easiest way to check it out would be too pull.  Its been sitting with the roof cut off many years ago and the frame is gone in sections plus its sunk to the ground.

The '60 Merc 312 should have C0TE heads, same as a 60 292 pick-up. Small valve, low compression. Basically the same as C1TE but no steam holes between the center chambers.

The LH exhaust is probably missing because it the same one used on 55-57 T-Birds. I guess the engine sat far enough forward to use that manifold instead of the usual Ford manifold. That's what I've been told, never worked on a 60 Merc.
