The list of parts needed for the 292 installation in my 55 sunliner is getting smaller as of today,I was able to pick up the very front motor mount and a correct looking road draft tube. The road draft tube is going to be a dummy since I am using a 62 292 and it came out of the donor with the tube unbroken so I would be willing to do some dealing on one thats broken since I will be ruining this one,I still might need to come up with a 55 or 56 timing chain cover for the front mount to work and I would like to find a set of 57 to 60 exhaust maifolds which I just remembered that yard has a 60 convertible with a 292 so I know where I will be next saturday. I wore myself out getting a 55 Pontiac rear bumper off for a friend who wants to use it on his 56 merc thats getting 56 Packard tail lights,it almost won the battle as there was one bolt that did not want to come offf and I broke that socket so I had to rip the trunk floor out over the bolt and use a wrench with a pipe and got it off. This is the yard that has the 60 merc with the 312 and they are wanting a little more than I want to pay for the motor so I am going to pass on it,if it had a good set of heads then maybe but it will be too much work for just a crank and will just keep it a 292.

I am curious as to how much they want for the 312? Tomorrow I go over to a guy's house who reports he has MANY Y engines and parts, and he is in a selling mood. Hopefully he will have a B intake or two, a couple sets of G heads, and maybe two or three 312 blocks that turn over...not likely but maybe?

They wanted in the 300 dollar range for the motor which might be worth it to the right person but not me,I did not tell them it was a 312 but a 292 and if it was about 150 I would bite on it. Its just not worth it to me since its got the small valve heads and will be hard to get at to remove so I will continue the hunt for another.

I looked at the 62 292 and the front cover is drilled for the mount so I can cros one thing off my list of parts needed.

junkyardjeff (10/31/2010) They wanted in the 300 dollar range for the motor which might be worth it to the right person but not me,I did not tell them it was a 312 but a 292 and if it was about 150 I would bite on it. Its just not worth it to me since its got the small valve heads and will be hard to get at to remove so I will continue the hunt for another.I would pass on that too. My trip today yielded a G head, a C head, car oil pan, '56 4 barrel manifold, and a carb. $85. Didnt see any 312s, but there were about 10 or so blocks scattered around.

Just remembered another part I need and its a car oil pan but I dont think there will be any good ones at the junkyard since most of the motors are open and full of water, the truck I took the road draft tube was full and a bunch came out when it was taken off. It was a 61 to 64 big truck with a 55 to 58? car motor including car oil pan but they put the truck carb and intake back on,when I go back for the manifolds I will look in the trunks or inside the cars but I have other sources if I come up empty handed.

Ah the old trip to the junkyard. Remember them well. We can't roam thru them here anymore in MI. Insurance I guess. When we were kids one of us would always need a trans, so we'd make our monthly trip to the "goldmine". We would end up buying one and throwing another one over the fence and fight the dogs for it that night. Think I still have bite marks on my legs. Fun was had by all.

Went back yesterday to get the disc brake spindles off a 70 torino for a friends 70 1/2 falcon and tried to find a set of 57 to 60 exhaust manifolds but no complete set but I found a PCV system on a 64 custom cab p/u that I grabbed,I do have a couple sets of 55/6 manifolds but was wanting to find the later manifolds since I heard they flow a little better then the earlier ones. All the 57 to 59s were missing the manifolds and there was a 60 sunliner which was the only 60 Ford in there to have a Y block but was missing the drivers side as with the 60 merc, most of the 60s had FEs but none were the 300 horse 352. I have a couple more yards to look through and will be watching ebay for the manifolds,I was suprised the PCV system was still on the truck and I think it was the only 63 to 64 with a correct year V8 in the yard but it was out back sitting by itself. There was a 61 to 64 big truck with a V8 but I think it had a 55 to 57 motor in it as it had that style of road draft tube which I grabbed last week.
