Just removed a newly rebuilt FE from a 64 bird (Has been sitting since 91) that I was given to part out and behind the starter there is no block casting numbers. It does have the 352 on the front of the block with 62 above that. Under the left head on the rear of the block there are some serial numbers stamped in a boss, they are as follows (0L105682) Behind the dipstick is the DIF upside down with a 36 above that also upside down. I have been all over FE sites and am coming up empty, do I have to separate the trans and motor to find the casting number?
Behind starter nothing?
Boss under left head with 0L105682
It Has the C8AE-H heads.

date code will be under the oil filter mounting boss on driver side near front of block.
you'll probably find true displacement by checking the stroke. 331-428.
check FE forum , network 54 and do a search for specific details.
i'd bet you have a 352 or a 390.

I have all the paperwork to decode all the FE's, thats not what I need. What I am saying is there is nothing on the block that says C3AE etc, this block is missing this code. the intake manifold has it but not the block. Its definately a 390 or bigger, and I don't want to tear it apart to find out. I was told to remove the center freeze plug and there are some numbers in there to decode it but the freeze plugs are new also and I don't want to go there unless I have to. Any other suggestions?

Bill, It has the C8AE-H heads, those numbers are clear. But because this was newly rebuilt 20 years ago and has 68 heads I was just wondering if the original block was used or something else? Its the block numbers that are nowhere to be found.

It’s not unusual for later model FE’s to not have casting numbers on the blocks. Are there only two bolts on each side of the block for motor mounts or are there four mounting spots on each side? Two bolts per side makes the block a ’64 or earlier while four bolts per side makes the block a ’65 or newer. Under the filter is the date code for the casting of the block. Are there two dots under the first number of the block date code? If so, then the block is from the early seventies but if this is the case, it will also have four motor mount bosses per side instead of only two per side found on the ’64 and earlier FE’s.

It Does have the 4 mounting bosses so it is later than 64. The date code is a W or M depending on which way you look at it.

I am amazed every time I log on of all the wealth of information and knowledge that is displayed here on a daily basis. There is lots of it that I print and put in my Y-Block file just to have. Again I will say "THANKS"!!

Ted, I am confused. I just replaced the mounts in my one-owner all original drivetrain 65 Galaxie 2drhtp. There are only two bolts per side on this block.
Never mind. Just de-confused myself. Looked at some photos of early and late FE's. 65 and up had two sets of motor mount bolt bosses on each side for different car/truck applications.
