We should applaud PHR. It's a rare day that out favorite engine gets a compliment in a main stream auto magazine. As Moon shadow mentions, I hope that writer doesn't get canned! Although I thought there was one or two mistakes in it, the whole article was quite intersting..

I grew up in a Nash family. My folks had 37,42,47 and 52 Ambassadors with the big OHV six.I've always thought they were the best six anyone ever built, with the possible exception of the 300 Ford.If those old Nash engines were treated to todays electronics and modern materials, they would rival anything built today in every respect.

Saw mention of the AMC 199 six. Those were great engines. I think the AMC inliner was probably the best of them; supremely rugged bottom-end. I've had several vehicles with 232s and 258s in them, though never a 199. The 199 had a short stroke, 3.0" crank. The 232 had a 3.5" stroke and the 258 had a 3.90" stroke. All had a 3.75" bore dimension.

Anyhoo, I wanted to chime in on my favorite inline six!

Yblock at 2010 Engine Masters Challenge

They have changed a few thing since last week to get to the video.
When you click on the link above when the page opens up look to the right of the page and see latest videos, click on the bottom bar for more videos, when page opens up look for 2010 Engine Masters Challenge Compettition Run Thru click on view full video, after a boring advertisement the 6.06 minute video will open and at 04.29 minutes you will see Ted's Engine Master Challenge Engine on the rack and I think it is a pull being performed with the engine. It is about a minute long.
There are other interesting videos as well such as the Engine Masters Challenge Overview

Good friend of mine had a 52 Scrub. Blew up the 216 ( Dip oil system...16/17 year old kid Wink . We went and found a 302 Jimmy that had been pulled out of a local Sprint car and replaced with a SBC. It had a 270 head, smaller chambers, some kind of an Isky Cam, McGurk 5 carb intake and Fentons. We stuffed it in the Chevy, had to move the radiator forward. One of the Seniors at high school had a Genuine 270 Bel Air (with a Tijuana interior!!) Larry ran him one night, He blew that SB off so bad the guy refused to pay the bet. Said he was cheatin! the only thing we found that could stay with him was a 56 Vicky with a dual quad 312, owned by the older brother of a girl I was dating. I understand he still has the Vick, 50 years later.

But as Chuck said, the sound was unbelievable, I still can't hear!

Who wrote the article? He/she may not be around long so we need to support him/her.

Those of us who remember the late 40's and early 50's can attest to the performance capability of the inline 6. (not to mention the straight 8's) There were a lot of serious race cars running them against the V8 Flatheads, and beating them. My early experience was with the Hudson 305 Cubic inch 6 cylinder flathead. Those Hudsons would stand up and sing! We ran it in a tube chassis sportsman/modified with a cut down model A sedan body. Cut at the back of the front doors then split in half. The body width was then cut down to a little more than the drivers shoulder width. We ran an in/out box and quick change rear end with the old 5 on 5 hubs. A real race car for the period.

I can also remember when the first V8's started appearing at the tracks. Scrubs were not the first choice in the early days. Buick and Ford were! But alas, time goes on and the truth becomes obscured. I really miss the sound of the Hudson, with straight out stubby exhaust, at full throttle screaming into the turns at Olympic and Riverside stadiums in Kansas City! You could always hear the Hudson even in traffic. Chuck in NH

Looking for McCullouch VS57 brackets and parts. Also looking for 28 Chrysler series 72 parts. And early Hemi parts.

I got the issue of PHR today. I was thinking it was the write up on the Engine Masters Challenge. But it's not. That comment is about the old days. I was kinda shocked to read that in a mainstream magazine. They even mention the NASCAR dominance.

On another note, I want a 199ci AMC inline 6. It was one of the other engines mentioned. One example was an Indy 500 contender. Stock head, block, and rocker arms, 105psi of boost (not a typo), 700hp! It still holds the record for the fastest lap time with a 6cyl, 150mph!

"the Y-block V8 often outperformed its small-block (scrub) competition"

We all knew that anyway.

I hope!

That's 180 from what they said last year. All it took was new heads.

No offense to Johns heads but I hope they were talking about years ago. Wink
