Popular Hot Rodding, Jan 2011 edition, has an article about old engines and  does a better job than usual describing the Y..including a pic of Ted's '09 Engine Masters entry.  One good quote ...  "the Y-block V8 often outperformed its small-block (scrub) competition"        Barry L

Yblock at 2010 Engine Masters Challenge

I got the issue of PHR today. I was thinking it was the write up on the Engine Masters Challenge. But it's not. That comment is about the old days. I was kinda shocked to read that in a mainstream magazine. They even mention the NASCAR dominance.



On another note, I want a 199ci AMC inline 6. It was one of the other engines mentioned. One example was an Indy 500 contender. Stock head, block, and rocker arms, 105psi of boost (not a typo), 700hp! It still holds the record for the fastest lap time with a 6cyl, 150mph!

Those of us who remember the late 40's and early 50's can attest to the performance capability of the inline 6. (not to mention the straight 8's) There were a lot of serious race cars running them against the V8 Flatheads, and beating them. My early experience was with the Hudson 305 Cubic inch 6 cylinder flathead. Those Hudsons would stand up and sing! We ran it in a tube chassis sportsman/modified with a cut down model A sedan body. Cut at the back of the front doors then split in half. The body width was then cut down to a little more than the drivers shoulder width. We ran an in/out box and quick change rear end with the old 5 on 5 hubs. A real race car for the period.

I can also remember when the first V8's started appearing at the tracks. Scrubs were not the first choice in the early days. Buick and Ford were! But alas, time goes on and the truth becomes obscured. I really miss the sound of the Hudson, with straight out stubby exhaust, at full throttle screaming into the turns at Olympic and Riverside stadiums in Kansas City! You could always hear the Hudson even in traffic. Chuck in NH

Good friend of mine had a 52 Scrub. Blew up the 216 ( Dip oil system...16/17 year old kid  . We went and found a 302 Jimmy that had been pulled out of a local Sprint car and replaced with a SBC. It had a 270 head, smaller chambers, some kind of an Isky Cam, McGurk 5 carb intake and Fentons. We stuffed it in the Chevy, had to move the radiator forward. One of the Seniors at high school had a Genuine 270 Bel Air (with a Tijuana interior!!) Larry ran him one night, He blew that SB off so bad the guy refused to pay the bet. Said he was cheatin! the only thing we found that could stay with him was a 56 Vicky with a dual quad 312, owned by the older brother of a girl I was dating. I understand he still has the Vick, 50 years later.

    But as Chuck said, the sound was unbelievable, I still can't hear!
