Thanks, I decided to have a rebuilder look at it, as the armiture in the spare one looked quite worn. He phoned and said it was wise that I pulled it out, as the rear bearing race has failed completely. No wonder it was noisy. Fortunately he says the electrics look ok. Repair is $70...

No mention of left hand threads in my literature re: generator rebuilding, so I am likely wrong. One thing to remember though, if the pulley isn't loose, and you want to save/resell it, be sure to use a gear puller to remove or you will damage it. A lot of generators out there with warped pulleys.

Paul,
Not sure, but I think the gen. pully nut is reverse threads. Increase torque to 65 ft. lbs. and don't overtighten the fan belt if you want the new bearings to last.

Paul: The pulleys will interchange. Keep any spacers with their respective pulleys. Right hand threads. Bearings are readily available at most parts stores and bearing supply houses. They are a light press fit on the shaft, there is a retainer plate that holds it in the housing. John

My 57 car generator apparently has a bad bearing as it howls when cold & when I put a stick on it & against my ear it feels really rough, & seems to be overheating in just a few minutes. I have a spare, both have the end plate # FAS 10139-B The original also has the #B6A 10002-A on the case. ( One or more of these #s may be Canadian manufactured ) Questions- Unfortunately the spare has a smaller pulley with a slightly different offset, so it does not line up with the other pulleys. Why ? Can I change the pulley ? Are they right hand thread? Also are the front bearings still available & are they pressed in? ( please, no alternator conversion advice! My car is on a stock "vintage plate" so an alternator conversion is not a legitimate change.)
