I am trying to use the original 272 in a 56 F-100 with a Heidts Super Ride 2 IFS. Can the oil pan be modified?

There were rear sump pans on T-Birds...not the cheapest thing to find. Pans can be modified to fit. Pretty much any configuration can be cut and welded,keeping in mind the rotating assembly of the crank and rods, dip stick tube and oil pick-up tube and screen. Canton makes all kinds of pans, but this is more likely to end up as a do-it yourself project. Barry

Raising the front portion of the oil pan the required amount to clear the ifs crossmember results in a reduction of 2 quarts of capacity. Normal being 5 quarts. I suppose I will also need to replace the 2 quart capacity by enlarging the back end of the rear sump pan or can I get by with more frequent oil checks and changes?

I would maintain at least the stock capacity.

I'm sure you knew the answer to this before you asked. 5 quarts is the amount required to lubricate and cool the engine. Any less is only asking for trouble. I'd hate to fry an engine because of 2 quarts of oil, in fact if it were me while I was modifing the pan I would increase the oil capacity. Oil is way cheaper than parts.

NM56F100 (1/1/2011) I am trying to use the original 272 in a 56 F-100 with a Heidts Super Ride 2 IFS. Can the oil pan be modified?Oil pans can be modified to fit almost any application. Just make it a point to insure that the oil pickup is ¼” or slightly more off the bottom of the pan. Here’s a picture of a recently modified Y-Block oil pan that was fabbed using a truck oil pan as a starting point which was already a rear sump design to begin with. The modified pan now has a much deeper sump along with some windage attributes added to the inside.

What did you do about the dip stick? It sets about mid pan front to back in the area that needs to be shortened.

Here’s a couple more pics. For this particular oil pan, the dipstick was installed on the pan itself as the windage tray within the pan was preventing the factory centrally located dipstick at the block from being used.
