Got my truck driving, worked great for about 2 days. Then it died, I could get it to restart but it would barley got 1/4 mile and die again until it eventually wouldn't go at all.
Got it home, checked the points and some other stuff and it fired up and would idle fine.
Drove it and didn't even make it a mile and it's doing the same thing. Tow it home again.
I installed a pertronix 3 ignition and new coil, same problem.
Seems to me like something is getting hot and shutting down?????
Any ideas on what might be causing this? '59 f250 w 292 yblock V8
When it dies I can pump the gas and see fuel spraying into the carb(there is also a clear filter before the carb so it's getting gas.) I also pulled a plug and it is getting spark. When I try to restart, it sometimes backfires, and makes hissing sounds like air shooting out the carb. Wondering if I have a timing problem, just not sure why it only comes up after a while and not right away.

I had a problem like that on a tractor and found out the valve guides were too tight

Others will have suggestions RE how to troubleshoot the spark end of things, but consider the following:
Pull the fuel hose and check the fuel pressure above the fuel filter. Start cranking and watch to see if the fuel pressure drops over time. Could be that you have a bad fuel pump, given that they don't always die immediately.

Does it just switch off (like someone turn off the ignition) or does it just gradually die out under load? Spike in OZ

So you're saying it did run good for 2 days, and it will start cold now but hisses and backfires when you try to start it hot...? You said you pulled one plug to check spark, but are you getting spark at all cylinders? Compression?

What is the last thing you worked on before it started doing this? If the heads were reworked, too little valve stem clearance is a possibility.

yes it ran good for 2 days then suddenly while driving this started, no work done.
I let it idle today until it fully warmed up and drove it around my yard a bit until the problem started again, it slowly looses power then eventually stalls.
Once it stalled and wouldn't restart i looked down the carb and pumped the throttle, gas sprayed into the carb.
I then pulled a plug and cranked it, there was spark. I let the motor sit for about 30 minutes and tried to start again, I was able to fire it up and it idled smooth but would occasionally cut out for a split second and almost die. I put a timing light on it(different cyl than I pulled plug from earlier) while it idled and while it was idling smooth these was consistent spark but each time it sputtered there was a pause it spark.
I feel like something must be plugged up somewhere since I had this problem with the stock points/coil with no change after installed the Ignitor III/flamethrower HC coil.

Is the fuel tank vent open? Try running it with the cap off. Also, if the inlet needle in the carb is Viton, it could be softened by the alcohol in the gas and sticking in the seat. When it finally falls out of the seat, gas can get in the bowl again. It may be that it dies from lack of fuel, and when you pump the throttle to check for gas, there is enough fuel in the accelerator pump circuit to give you a couple more shots, making you think there is gas in the bowl. Maybe pull the top off the carb and looking for fuel next time it dies.

I agree wit Eddie. Do you still have a resistor? You stated you still had fuel in the carb after it dies so that rules out a fuel delivery problem. You also said that you can see a spark misfire. I would concentrate on a ignition related issue. Hook a wire directly from the positive side (assuming neg ground) of the battery to the positive terminal on the coil and run again to see if problem goes away. Don't do this if you have a 6 volt Pertronix unit, instead install a new resistor and hook power from positive on battery to resistor. This will eliminate other electrical causes from the equation.
