I am a confused about my new distributor.  After reading a recent post I read that the centrifugal advance distributors have springs located on the top plate.  I was told recently to buy a dist. for a 63/64 Ford truck with a 292 if I wanted a modern dist. to run a newer style carb.  I am attaching a pic of that dist.  I see spring attached under the top plate on this dist. Will this work for me?

It is the vacuum only distributors that have the springs on top. Yours looks correct for the '57 on mechanical and vacuum distributor.

What motor are you putting this in?Prior to 55(1954) the drive gear has to be swapped to the early style and the oil pump and drive shaft have to be changed to the 55 and up pump.If you bought a distributor for the early 60's 292 that looks like the correct one.You will also need a 57-74 cap and rotor to go with that distributor.

it will be going in a 1956 292 bored .040 over, and I will be changing it over to a Pentronix ignition.

Looks like the right one.  I did this swap last summer with the Ignitor III and Flame Thrower coil on my 55 Merc with a 292.  It was very easy and runs great.
