This crank had the moon style cutout and no dots.

According to Mummerts info this should be a 292.The main caps are ECZ.

Merc engine-any ideas till I tear it apart?

Was the 312 engine a Canadian engine as I have seen several without the dot.

On the recent two 57 Canadian Merc 312 engines I built the main bolt holes were drilled deeper than the 56 Canadian 312 engines or the earlier USA 312's. The main bosses were drilled between 1.380" -1.395" and also had the heavier webbing around the mains like the later USA C2AE or B9AE engines. The one bolt by the filter is usually drilled into the oil gallery. These engines are stamped VV on the left side of the block just below the deck and marked by the distributor CECK with ECZ on mains.

The ‘no dot’ scenario on the 312 crankshaft flywheel flanges seems to show up reasonbably often. Anytime a crankshaft with no identifier on the flywheel flange shows up, it’s worth a second look as it could indeed be a 312 crankshaft. If the crankshaft is in a position where the front journal can be seen, then the lightening hole sizing in that front journal hasn’t failed me yet for identification. For the 312’s it’s been ¾” while the 272/292’s use a 15/16” size hole.

While the 5/16” dot being present has been a very good indicator of a 312 crankshaft, having no dot present can point to a 272, 292, or 312 crankshaft. The raised dot being missing on a 312 crankshaft doesn’t appear to be a Canadian nuance as these cranks show up regularly throughout the U.S.

Here are some more links discussing identification of 312 crankshafts.

Please allow me to expose the deteriorating recall section of my brain.  I knew I had a 312 crank and must have spend a good half an hour looking for it recently.  Finally I called Tim to see if we had done something with it and he assured me I still had it somewhere.  I told him I had checked all my cranks, but no dot was present in any of the moon shaped divots in the crank flanges.  He said, "Turn the crank flange 180* and look again."  Damn!!!  The dot isn't in the moon shape cut out, it is in a depression (and not concave) area.

It sure is nice to hang out with younger people!

The dot in the depressed area is visible in the second link to "312 crank id" posted by Ted above.  Look at the link to a picture by Flathead jr. and it shows that the dot is not in the "moon shaped" cut out of the flange.

I had a Canadian CECK block a while back. Turned out to be a 292 with too much core shift to bore past 312. Went on the auction block. Chuck in NH
