I have seen a couple pictures of engines that have had AN lines replacing the oil pickup tubes. Anyone on here done it and if so what fitting was used to adapt to the pump. I am going to build a deep sump pan for the falcon and want to use a different pickup and AN tubing. I know JC did it, but it looked as if he just JB welded a fitting in, not pretty but it worked.

Glen:

I believe JC tapped the pump housing 3/4" NPT, and used a pipe to AN fitting.  He probably also JB Welded it, knowing Jerry.  I would think permatex or pipe sealer would do.

Thanks John, I'll try that on an old pump. I also had though of welding a AN steel bung fitting into the stock compression nut. I just finished surfing Mummert's and Ted's sites and spotted a couple of pictures where they uses flex lines. Maybe they have another idea.

If it's a pretty common thread size, there may very well be a fitting that will screw right in.

I had thought of using a bulkhead AN fitting for the pan and thread the pump for the an/pipe thread and use steel braided line between them.  The bulkhead could have the pick-up tube welded to it on the inside of the pan after you deepen it and place you pick-up where you want it. Earl's has a lot of choices http://www.anplumbing.com/shop/  PAW was a great place to get them, but has downsized to early Hemi parts only now.

Here’s are some pics of what I did with the roadster engine.  The oil pump was tapped for a pipe threaded #12AN fitting and the oil pump tube had the appropriate male #12AN fitting welded to it.  A hose with AN accomodating fittings on each end completed the assembly.

Another option would be to weld a steel AN fitting on the factory tube nut that goes into the pump and then use that assembly in the oil pump.  The oil pump in this instance would require minimal modifications.but some sort of sealer would be required as your now dealing with straight non-bottoming threads.

Thanks Guys, I was just wishing that someone had stumbled on a fitting that would thread into the existing threads in the pump. I spent a couple of hours surfing the online suppliers trying to find something that looked like it would work with no luck. I am leaning towards welding a AN fitting into the stock flange nut, but will look at rethreading to pipe threads. My plans are too use a bulkhead fitting through the pan and extend the braided line down to a Canton pickup fastened to the bottom rear of the sump. I have a deep sump pan that fits well in a 57 ford, but it is too deep (about 5" over stock) and I am afraid that it will contact the straight axle under hard landings. I am looking at adding about 2" and maybe extending the sump sides out a couple of inchs like Ted's roadster pan. Also I plan to add a windage tray of some sort, I like the looks of the one that Ted uses made of wire mesh. All this is just for future use, for now just a stock pan.

Is it not acceptable to cut the pickup tube so that enough of a nipple remains once the nut and packing is installed to clamp a hose over it?
