Ted, Ford in Australia when remanufacturing the y blocks in the 60,s used to tunnelbore the mains .015" O/S and used big back main bearings to stay on centerline, these bearings were still in 010, 020. 030. 040 U/S on the journals but became exceptionally hard to obtain, hence many unwary engine buyers thinking they had great ford remanufactured engine had to look for Std block, they had chrome tag attached to block. Bill.  That’s downright scary.  That is like the Checker six cylinder engines here that had a run of crankshafts that were 0.009” undersize and the ‘special’ bearings were stamped ‘STD’.   If you didn’t mic the crankshaft and just put a set of standard bearings back in, you were in for a real surprise when you cranked the engine back up.  The main tunnels being bored would be a harder catch for sure.

David.  Small square flange at the carburetor base or the larger later model Holley carb flange on the intake?  Based on the block casting number, the engine likely started life out as a 272.  Once a rebuilder did their thing to it, the engine could be anything right up to some form of 292 based engine at this point.  It was common practice to take the 272’s out to a 292 bore size back in the day.  What info is on the manufacturer’s tag?  Assuming the engine has been rebuilt, the tag is a starting point but no insurance that the engine hasn’t been rebuilt again since the manufacturer’s tag was first put on the engine.  It may take a tear down to determine exactly what you have but if the engine runs good as it is, then there’s not much in tearing it down unless replacing the gaskets due to age.

The tag on the block says: its been bored .040 over crank turned .010 rods and .010 mains. So a pretty go rebuild! Im doin research on the trans i think it may be a HD trans that came out on the 57 big trucks. It weighs a TON!!! I was told there is a R11 and R10 trans. What one is the best? I havent got to look at the trans much other than the weight! haha! Thanks for the help and i am VERY excited about owning a Y!!! David

Welcome to the site. I'd be interested in that OD trans. let me know if you want to get rid of it. It might work great in my old truck.

That od tranny is about the next best thing to the

t5 for cruising. However, you can always sell it after

you install the t5. I would bet someone will want it.

Pull the pan and see what the main cap numbers are.

There is virtually no way to tell what cubic inch it is until yuou open it up.

Spend some time on this site and learn what I mean.
