Long story short: sold a '89 S-10 to hispanic cheap, he sold it to another guy for a little more, the other guy needed my wifes signature on the title for transfer. The new buyer was here today for the sig. We were talking and he said he bought it to replace his 90 something truck that was gettin 8mpg! I said what does it have a 460? No a 351. He put a 1000 bucks into it to improve the mileage and it was still 8 afterwards.

I have a friend, best man at my wedding, he has two '92 F-250s one with a 460 and one with a 351 they get the same mileage but the 460 can get more work done. Don't get a smaller engine thinking it will do better on gas.

I had a mid'80's Ford F-250 Trailer Special with the 400ci, basically a bigger version of the 351. It also got around 8 MPG and boy what a slug. Not only did it burn a lot of gas but it had no power. Trailer Special?? It couldn't even haul itself up a hill. Biggest POS I ever owned, almost turned me off Ford Trucks.

I have a 94 F150 351 that has 190,000 miles on it and still gets around 16-18 MPG.It doesn't matter whether it's loaded or empty,the mileage is about the same.It has an E4OD transmission and 3.83 gears.And has more than enough power for any load a sensible person would put on a 1/2 ton truck.

PWH42 (3/28/2011) I have a 94 F150 351 that has 190,000 miles on it and still gets around 16-18 MPG.It doesn't matter whether it's loaded or empty,the mileage is about the same.It has an E4OD transmission and 3.83 gears.And has more than enough power for any load a sensible person would put on a 1/2 ton truck.That sounds good. I need to look for an older truck to replace my Ranger within the next year. Is the E4OD one of the disposable transmissions that cant be rebuilt, only replaced with a new unit?

The E4OD can be rebuilt.The front pump went bad on mine last year and when I had it replaced,I had the shop rebuild the whole thing,even though the rebuilder said it really didn't need it.He also installed a shift kit,so now I can tell when it shifts.The cost wasn't as bad as some late model transmissions.If I remember correctly(hard to do at my age)it was $1400.

The 87 F150 I had years ago had a 351 4 bbl-C6 with 3.08 gears and got 16 to 18 on the highway.

The transmission man that has done a couple of c-6 trans for me says that when he rebuilds a E4OD with the upgrades they stay together and don't come back. He claims Ford actually did it right by continuing to improve the E4OD over the years, and he ends the statement by saying,"And I ain't a Ford guy either". So take it for what it's worth. Mike
