My buddy has a 317 y in a lincoln cosmo he wants to get it rebuilt or put somthing bigger in the car any suggestions on what he could do?? Thanks gary

that engine went to 341cu.in. in 55 and 368 for 56-57. also a FE ford 390 is the same phisical size and is a simple swap.

The LYB engines including the 317 have a bellhousing pattern that is unique to that family of engines. The Ford FE bellhousing bolt pattern is different although if not paying close attention, they can be mistaken for being the same. Due to this difference, transmission options should be scoped out before jumping into the swap.
